The PYH Initiation programs include the DoodleBugs Beginner / Intermediate and the Overage Beginners (ages 9-16) Programs. This program is for skaters following USA Hockey’s Initiation Program guidelines stressing skill development and de-emphasizing competition. Beginner/Intermediate programs typically begin the last week of September and/or first week of October and end at the end of February or early March. The Overage program typically begins in mid October and runs through early March. Early registration is strongly recommended.
We are pleased to announce that a professional hired trainer will coordinate our on ice sessions for the upcoming year. All participants will have the opportunity to learn from the best while maintaining our parent on ice involvement. Our intention is to maximize our ice utilization and formalize the training to instill strong basic hockey skills for the participants, while allowing a program that enhances player skills without jeopardizing the “fun” portion of the program. Our intent is to follow USA Hockey Guidelines and continued use of the Cross Ice Program.
Registered Initiation program skaters will receive an e-mail in mid-September to go over details of the program, and to arrange an introductory meeting where you can meet the director of the program and pick up your jersey for the season. For families new to hockey, we will be able to demonstrate and answer your questions about required equipment at that meeting.
Our hockey program promotes parent involvement; your efforts make our program what it is! Please take the time to consider becoming a manager, coach or volunteer.
Open to skaters age 4-8 with little or no skating skills.
Emphasis will be on balance, forward and backward skating, crossover turns, and stops.
Open to skaters age 4-6 who have successfully completed the beginner level and are ready to learn basic hockey and team skills. Players will participate in some Cross Ice Jamborees against teams from other organizations.
Skaters should be able to demonstrate forward and backward skating ability, stopping, and turning to be placed at this level. As the season progresses players will be placed in groups and skate under the direction of a coach when participating in the planned jamborees. Practices will consist of skating, hockey and team skill development, and scrimmages.
The Perinton Youth Hockey Overage Beginners program is open to boys and girls, ages 9 – 16, who want to learn the fundamental skills needed to play on a team. Our entire season focus is on skills and not competition. Players learn the team environment. Consistent practice schedule twice a week, all at Rochester Ice Center (formerly Thomas Creek Ice Arena). This program is UNIQUE to Perinton Youth Hockey and offers kids a great opportunity to find out if hockey is for them!
